What Is Alcohol Use Disorder?

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) describes AUD as "a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences." The NIAAA also notes that alcohol use disorder comes in many forms "and can be mild, moderate or severe" and "it encompasses the conditions that some people refer to as alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol addiction, and the colloquial term, alcoholism."

According to NIAAA, in the United States, approximately 85.6% of individuals over the age of 18 drank alcohol. In addition, they stated that "alcohol contributes to about 18.5 percent of ED visits and 22.1 percent of overdose deaths related to prescription opioids." Approximately 14.5 million people over the age of 12 met the criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD) in 2019. Over the past decade, deaths directly caused by AUD have increased over 40%, making it one of the most dangerous diseases of our time. The prevalence of alcohol abuse in the U.S. has led to:

  • Increased heart-related conditions and deaths
  • Increased instances of opioid overdose
  • Increased mental health disorders related to addiction

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Use Disorder

You can identify alcohol use disorder from the multiple side effects and symptoms. Alcohol affects the brain and many essential systems in the body. Unfortunately, the signs of AUD are not always noticeable until the damage is significant. To determine if someone meets the criteria for AUD, our intake specialist will ask questions about your past and current activities. The questions are based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and we use them to determine the presence and severity of AUD. Common signs and symptoms of AUD include:

  • Drinking more or longer than intended
  • Drinking affecting your work or personal responsibilities
  • The urge to drink more to achieve a more pronounced effect
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when alcohol effects wear off (shakiness, restlessness, trouble sleeping, etc.)
  • Cravings or intrusive thoughts about drinking
  • Decreased engagement in activities and hobbies

If you or a loved one identify with two or more of the signs listed above, you may meet the criteria for AUD. A diagnosis is one of the first steps to getting the proper treatment which may include alcohol detox that will help you reduce risks associated with alcohol use disorder. Often people seek treatment for the symptoms and not the disease, but those are only short-term solutions. To truly heal, you need to use resources such as those found in our alcoholism treatment program, where trained professionals can monitor your condition and provide real-time adjustments as needed.

Only a small percentage of individuals who meet the criteria for alcohol use disorder get treatment for the condition. Most only seek medical assistance for the side effects. At Crescent Moon Recovery, we believe in treating the whole person instead of focusing solely on the symptoms or a single diagnosis. We strive to create a space where we can meet all of your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Risks Associated With Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorder can have short- and long-term health risks. Chronic drinking has the potential to cause serious health problems, blackouts, and even fatalities. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reports that abusing alcohol can lead to the following:

  • Increased risk of developing liver diseases, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis
  • Increased risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, breast, and liver
  • Increased risk of death from suicides, car crashes, injuries, and homicide
  • Increased risk to pregnancies and pregnant mothers
  • Permanent damage to the brain and other organs

Short-term risks of excessive alcohol use, typically from binge drinking, can result in the following:

  • Injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings
  • Violence
  • Alcohol poisoning
  • Unprotected sex resulting in unintended pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases

Long-term risks from continued excessive alcohol use can result in serious health risks and chronic conditions, including:

  • Alcohol use disorder (AUD)
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Weakened immune system
  • Mental health concerns such as depression or anxiety

Monitoring your alcohol intake and knowing your boundaries can significantly reduce and even prevent short and long-term health risks.

Excessive Drinking Versus Binge Drinking

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are three types of drinking:

  • Excessive
  • Moderate
  • Heavy

The CDC defines excessive drinking as "binge drinking, heavy drinking, and any drinking by pregnant women or people younger than age 21." Binge drinking is the most common form of drinking and is defined as four or more drinks on one occasion for women and as five or more drinks on one occasion for men. Women who drink eight or more drinks per occasion and men who drink fifteen are considered heavy drinkers. Moderate drinking is one drink or less a day for women and two for men. In this case, "a drink" is approximately .6 ounces of pure alcohol.

Co-Occurring Disorders and Conditions

Many people abuse alcohol for the same reason they abuse drugs as a way to cope with debilitating and uncomfortable mental or physical conditions. We understand that these comorbidities can intertwine and cause overlapping symptoms and health issues, which is why our Orange County alcohol rehab  is focused on treating the whole person and not just the disease. Alcohol use disorder can co-occur with the following:

  • Chronic pain
  • Major depression
  • Bipolar
  • Anxiety and panic disorders
  • Anti-social personality disorder
  • Other mental  or physical disorders

You should receive treatment for each condition simultaneously rather than only treating one and ignoring any others. We provide that level of care. Luckily, for most disorders, we can treat the co-occurring issues with the same therapeutic methods as alcohol use disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other psychotherapies are used to stabilize mental health disorders during short-term rehabilitation programs.

12-Step Program

One of the most critical aspects of alcohol treatment is our ability to help you transition successfully out of our Orange County alcohol rehab centers. The ultimate goal of treatment is to give you the information and support you need to maintain your sobriety at home while living independently. 12-Step groups and organizations are an excellent source of accountability, motivation, and inspiration. Peer community support is essential to continued sobriety. You will benefit from attending meetings after and during outpatient treatment. If you feel uncertain or uncomfortable with the idea of 12-Step groups then you might find some answers in our 12-Step facilitation (TSF) therapy where you can learn about the 12-Step philosophy and principles. A therapist will walk you through what to expect from a meeting and show you ways that the Twelve Steps can change your life for the better.

Alcohol abuse is prevalent in the U.S. and it is a leading cause of developing additional life-threatening conditions like heart disease. Your mental and physical health will improve when you succeed at long-term sobriety. Unfortunately, social drinking and over-drinking are often unacknowledged or even encouraged, while stigmas exist around official diagnosis and treatment of alcohol use disorder.
